The Old Man Kangaroo has decided to spend the hot summer nights on the small patches of green kikuyu grass around the houses. He is very thin and moves slowly, but has flattened the fence in a couple of places so that it is easy to get over. He is outside our bedroom window right now quite untroubled by Cosi fan Tutte. On the back lawn George is topping up on the green grass over the
septic tank runs, having done his best on the roses and the almond trees.
There are bird baths all around the garden, and there are 2 main events – the first in the olive tree nursery when we turn the sprays on. WHAT a cacophony!! It is the greatest fun to watch them all shimmying and flapping and chortling in the sprays, and then they sit on the fence or the washing line – and whatever is on it – to hang their wings out to dry!
The second is when the Splashpots in
Annie’s birdbath every evening have such a bath time that we need to refill it so that George can have his drink in the night. All the little yellow honey eaters frequent Annies, along with the crested pigeons and red rumped parrots. The magpies are absolutely abominable to all of them, and if it looks as if anyone is having a good time, they break it up quick smart! If they feel like
it! Denis spends a fair amount of time sitting on Annie’s airconditioner glowering at her through the window because no one ever feeds them any more. They only get 2 margarine pots of soaked dog bikkis a day …!
And while this Niagara stuff is happening, Vidal and Conchita (the hares) nibble away at the grass on the fence. They try to hide from us by laying their ears flat along their
backs and keeping still. The magpies promptly start to dive bomb them and peck at their bottoms to make them move. Poor things – it is so funny to watch!
