In Provence the olive tree is integral to the community. In the Roman town on Arles, the Place de la Republique is graced by large pots of olives. The building at the rear is the Arles l’hotel de ville (town hall).

The olive also provides wares for a lucrative tourist trade. Displays of the local Provencale cloth feature olives, lavender, and sunflowers. The tablecloth featured in the window display sells for 145 francs ($AUD 36.00).

An equally magnificent olive tree enhanced our first view of the spectacular Pont du Gard, built by the Romans 2000 years ago.

The stone lies adjacent to the tree. We couldn't work out whether the inscription relates to the tree or the aqueduct?
